Top 5 Favorite Reads of 2013!

Happy New Year everyone!!

As we head into a new year we're also preparing for all of the new books and new authors that we will discover in 2014. This means making room on our overflowing bookshelves so that we can add more! Below I've shared a list of my top five favorite reads of 2013 and why they made the list!

My Top 5 Reads of 2013:

It's a chilling, expertly written, and captivating tale that's in Gaiman fashion—a maddeningly great novel. It'll give you goose bumps, and resonate. It's the best fictional work I've read all year!
 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Bloodlines, #3)

I thought the Vampire Academy series was really good until I started the Bloodlines spin-off with Adrian. His mischievous nature and charm won me over, as well as Sydney's growth since her first appearance in VA. Where once she was frightened and helpless she's now strong and more confident. Each book tops the next and The Indigo Spell was phenomenal, but I didn't expect any less from Richelle Mead! She's fantastic at quality consistency story-telling!

(Sweet, Texas, #1)
by: Candis Terry

Anything But Sweet has it all. Character's you'll adore, Texan brothers who make it hard not to swoon over, feisty independent women, and genuine humor that will have you rolling. The entire town of Sweet, Texas is full of a community of people with stories to tell, and characters to love. It's the cutest, sweetest read of 2013.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Starbound, #1)

This story broke my heart into a tiny million pieces and then glued them back together again. It's beautifully composed with alternating perspectives between the two main characters Lilac & Tarver. Set in the middle of space. It's dark, warped, and devastatingly mysterious. Tortuously addicting, and a crazy-good science fiction novel. Best of the lot.
 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Summer, #2)

An Endless Summer is the Australian-written sequel to the fun, summery, and humorous Boys of Summer! The town of Onslow is beach central with hot guys, and gorgeous girls seeking a good time, friendship, and love. The Onslow boys are the town's resident hotties and each Summer novel is a different couple's story from the group. The second being about Amy and Sean who make an unpredictably sexy pair. It earns the place of favorite summer novel of the year!

Revelations (Review)

(The Elysium Chronicles, #2)

Publisher: Tor Teen
Release Date: November 5th, 2013
Genre(s): YA Science Fiction/Dystopia

My Review: (4/5 stars*)

Revelations is swathed in mystery and allure. Much of what made the first novel Renegade so creepily enchanting is subdued in its sequel, but it brings forth a new layer of terror—life on the Surface. Unlike the magical world of Elysium, the Surface is a scarier place for the main character Evelyn because it's unfamiliar to her. She's very much on her own journey to find herself again and put the pieces of her life back together. Gavin is a part of that but he makes a disappearance for half of the book which at first I thought was a bad thing, but Evie needed to discover who she is without him as her shadow. She leaves her world and has to live and survive in a new one that's so alien and foreign. No longer is she a lethal Enforcer, but a fragile young woman with no memory of her past. Revelations feels like reading a different story because the magical aspect is submerged with Elysium and not too present in this installment.

Revelations opens up with Evie living on the Surface without her memories of the past sixteen years. Adapting to this new way of life is challenging, especially since she has started blacking out. Too afraid to tell Gavin she puts herself at risk and endangers the lives of others. Having no other choice she seeks the help of a local doctor who doesn't seem to know why she goes into fugue-like states and recommends that traveling to The Outlands is her best bet. As her condition worsens she journeys to the walled city but she runs into trouble along the way.

Readers have to learn to like Evelyn all over again because she's not the same person she was in Renegade. That for me was tricky because I really grew to like the rebellious and strong girl she became. Towards the end you catch glimpses and slip-ups of her former self but she's not who you knew, but a different version. I'm hoping her amnesia isn't temporary or plays as much of a part in next novel. Gavin—as much as I love him—is detrimental to Evie. He wants to protect her and by doing so he treats her like a breakable teacup, and withholds information. Gavin tries to take away her decisions by making Evie's choices for her and I didn't like that. Call it a personal thing but I don't like when people tell you what you can and cannot do. You control your own life, it's what Mother did and he's trying to do it now to a lesser extent. He stoops low, and I guess that's why I was so quick to like Asher—the new guy—whose introduced. Unlike who Gavin's become Asher lets Evie do what she wants as long as it's not too dangerous, and he doesn't lie to her. While Gavin and Evie are separated Asher starts to develop feelings and a connection to Evie. It isn't the love triangle you're expecting though. All the revelations and excitement are saved for the last 50 pages.

I had such a hard time gathering my thoughts about this novel because I was blown away by the first but Revelations didn't impress me in the same way. I enjoyed it but it felt more like a transitional filler piece. It isn't heavy on the romance, the action scenes are far apart, and the shocking revelations are left to the end. Where the first novel left me wanting more, this one really should have had more in it - answer-wise, and action-wise. I understand that when you have a series you can't give away everything in the beginning but it could have been better paced. I wanted to love this as I had its predecessor but for most of the book not a whole lot happened. The redeeming factor was that the last 100 pages had the quality writing I wish I'd seen from the start.

J.A. Souders is a talented YA writer, she has imagined a beautiful underwater utopia and above ground, a hardened world that has a frightening reality. Revelations has a few small but important developments about Evie. Though the sequel feels drawn out it's a good addition to the Elysium Chronicles. I'm hopeful that the next novel will be much better based on the cliffhanger at the end I'm sure it will. If you enjoy dark dystopias with a touch of romance I'd recommend you pick up this series.

Synopsis:

Six weeks after her arrival on the Surface, Evelyn Winters is no closer to unlocking the memories lost in her subconscious than she was when she first came. Isolated in a strange new society, Evie has only Gavin Hunter to remind her of who she once was.

But even with a clean slate, it’s easy to see that Evie doesn’t fit in on the Surface. And as her differences make her feel more and more alone, she can’t help but yearn for that place she doesn’t remember: the isolated city hidden in the depths of the ocean. Elysium. Home.

But she can’t exactly tell Gavin what she’s feeling. Not when he’s the one who helped her escape Elysium in the first place, and has the scars to prove it. Though the doctors say otherwise, Gavin believes that Evie just needs time. And if her memories don’t come back, well, maybe she’s better off not remembering her past.

But the decision may be out of their hands when Evie’s ever-elusive memories begin to collide with reality. People and images from her past appear in the most unlikely places, haunting her, provoking her…and making her seem not only strange but dangerous.

Evie and Gavin can’t wait around for her memories to return. They’ll have to journey across the Outlands of the Surface to find help, and in the end, their search may just lead them back to the place it all started…

Stacking the Shelves (#21)

~ Stacking the Shelves is a meme post hosted by: Tynga from Tynga's Reviews. Stacking the Shelves is a blog meme where you share your recent book purchases, physical book buys, review books, borrowed books, or any books you have recently acquired. ~

I finally bought Shatter Me! I've heard bloggers everywhere saying this series by Tahereh Mafi is a must-read and I've finally added it to my shelf. Another book series that's been around for awhile and I'm just getting to it now is Hush, Hush by: Becca Fitzpatrick. Am I crazy for not having read this years ago? Maybe, but I grabbed the first & second book Crescendo from my library. So far I'm liking it, wouldn't call it love just yet. Very much intrigued as to where the story's heading. Dangerous Refuge looks like a fun romance with suspense - it has been way too long since I've read that type of book. I'm excited for these four novels!

Romance Prize Pack (Giveaway)

Eloisa James, Laura Kaye, Sarah MacLean, and Julia Quinn.

Earlier in the month I drove out to East Brunswick, NJ to the romance signing and got to meet Eloisa James, Laura Kaye, Sarah MacLean and Julia Quinn. It was such a fun night! I also got to hang out with the incredible people responsible for hosting the event, the HarperCollins Avon Romance ladies Pamela Spengler-Jaffee and Caroline Perny. We had a great time discussing authors, good books, the impact of bloggers, and the Avon program that I'm a part of—Avon Addicts. I was even able to meet Nancy whose another romance fan and a new author as well as a member of the same Avon Addicts group! It was pretty exciting :)

Left to right: Pam, Nancy, Me, and Caro!

What was my experience like? Well, Eloisa James offered me some great writing advice that I plan on utilizingand she was so sweet! I didn't get to speak with Julia Quinn all that much but she's really nice. I got to meet up with Laura Kaye at the nearby Panera, and she was just as lovely. Laura said that she often writes there, which is pretty cool! Who wouldn't be inspired surrounded by coffee and baked goods?! It's a great writing environment. Sarah MacLean whom I've met before was friendly and animated about her historical series (which I totally LOVE by the way, The Rules of Scoundrels - add it to your TBR!), and looking forward to becoming a new mother (which she became a few weeks later when she had a baby girl!!). It's amazing meeting the people behind the books you read, they are as interesting as the novels they write. I am constantly surprised by how approachable most authors are, even the popular ones!

I obtained some book swag at the event and I wanted to share it with my readers so below you can enter to win an awesome romance prize pack!

That One Summer (Review) (Giveaway)

*Hey lovelies today is my stop on the That One Summer blog tour. It may not be summer just yet but this series is sure to warm you up and take you on an Australian adventure! Below I've shared my thoughts on this amazing NA romance*

*Hosted by: The Three Bookateers*

(Summer, #3)

Release Date: December 17th, 2013
Genres: New Adult Contemporary Romance

My Review: (4.5/5 stars*)

Every time I read a novel by Duggan I fall in love all over again. The characters, the Australian setting, and the humor are always on point. When I grab a book I am looking to get lost in it - that's what happens with the Summer series! That One Summer is an absolute hit!

It centers on Tammy Maskala who is brought into the picture in An Endless Summer as Amy Henderson's BFF from high school. She lurks on the fringe of the Onslow boys group, very much unsure of how she fits into it. She appears shy but inwardly she's sassy and full of spirit. Her thoughts are laugh-out-loud funny, and Tammy's always finding herself in the most hilarious of situations. I loved Tess and Amy but I feel like Tam has the perfect cross-blend of their personalities and she's such a great character. On one hand she's more to herself like Tess was and on the other she can be outgoing like Amy. I wasn't expecting such an instant likable heroine in the way that the others were but that's exactly what she was.

That One Summer is set right after the events of An Endless Summer, told from Tammy Maskala's POV. When I heard it was going to be her whose story was next I was a little confused. That confusion was soon replaced by how-could-I-even-doubt-the-choice. Her story is refreshing because her only tie to the Onslow Boys is Amy, and it made the awe over them feel new again. Toby and Sean were the obvious eye-candy of the gang, as well as favorites. Chris Henderson is someone who sort of slipped under the radar for me. As an Onslow boy he didn't leave the biggest impression because in previous stories he always just seemed like the grumpy bartender and Adam's older brother who didn't have much to say. However, in this novel his character is brought to the forefront with a compelling story all his own. Tammy brings out another side of him that we never got to see before. This side is outgoing, compassionate, and sexy. Who'd have thought those qualities were hiding under his sullen mask? Not me! Chris and Tammy are the pefect match. They get put in awkward situations and roll with it, and all the things you'd think would draw them apart actually brings them together. I thought they had such a sweet developing relationship, and I loved it.

It's Summer again in the town of Onslow, Australia and it's nearing the new millennium. The Onslow boys are back and ready for an unforgettable adventure—a road-trip without the girls. Amy Henderson puts a stop to that when she makes her recently reunited best friend Tammy Maskala intercede. Onslow is the last place the girls want to ring in the New Year so they crash the Onslow boys' plans and join them on the road, but they hit a few bumps along the way. Tammy has always felt like the outsider of the group, hanging out on the sidelines and never truly feeling like one of them. That all changes one summer when she gets up close and personal with one of the Onslow boys—Chris Henderson. Chris is the broody bartender who says little and seems to have a permanent scowl on his face. It's only when Tammy gets left behind by her friends Chris steps up to drive her to their New Year's destination, and that's when Summer really starts to heat up.

All of the fun-loving Aussie boys are back! Couples Tess and Toby, Amy and Sean, even Adam and Ellie return along with the rest of the Onslow boys. It was great to see them all together again, and they each got their own small story-lines too. I enjoyed the surprises and turns taken. Tammy has a lot going on inside and seeing Chris ruffle her feathers and vice versa was adorable. The difference in setting gives a refreshing and welcome change. I wouldn't have minded it being set at the Onslow Hotel again, but I'm glad there was other locations to visit.

That One Summer is total fun! From the first page to the last you'll want, crave, and need more. It has a swoony romance, drama, comedy, and characters you won't want to let go of. C.J.'s fictional town of Onslow and its residents will live in your imagination for books to come. Never have I been so eager for the next novel Duggan writes! The Summer series is outstanding, and readers who love their NA romances should buy it today!

Synopsis:

Loving Chris Henderson would be wrong. Diabolically disastrous. I mean, what is there about him to love? He’s moody, bossy, brooding, a control freak, and that’s on a good day … but there was one achingly obvious fact that haunted my every thought, every minute of every day …

He sure could kiss.

As the countdown to the new millennium begins, there is one thing everyone agrees on: no one wants to be in Onslow for New Year’s Eve.

So that can only mean one thing: road trip!

No longer the mousey, invisible, shy girl from years ago, Tammy Maskala is finally making up for all those lost summers. A new year with new friends, which astoundingly includes the bossy boy behind the bar, Chris Henderson.

She likes her new friends (at least most of them), so why does she secretly feel so out of place?

After chickening out on the trip, a last-minute change of heart sees Tammy racing to the Onslow Hotel, fearing she’s missed her chance for a ride. The last thing she expected to meet was a less-than-happy Onslow Boy leaning against his black panel van.

Now the countdown begins to reach the others at Point Shank before the party is over and the new year has begun. Alone in a car with only the infuriating Chris Henderson, Tammy can’t help but feel this is a disastrous start to what could have been a great adventure. But when the awkward road trip takes an unexpected turn, Tammy soon discovers that the way her traitorous heart feels about Chris is the biggest disaster of all.

Fogged up windows, moonlight swimming, bad karaoke and unearthed secrets; after this one summer nothing will ever be the same again.
