Saga drops you right in the center of an extraterrestrial war between two races. It focuses on Alana and Marko, a pair of star-crossed lovers, who bring a child into their battle-torn world. They are forced on the run with their newborn baby, and carry with them hope that they'll find a safe haven elsewhere. An epic saga begins on their quest to protect their family and raise their child while searching for a life without blood-shed and conflict.
Fiona Staples artwork perfectly captures the world and transitions readers fluidly into each scene. Alana and Marko's exchanges amidst their impending fates are twined with wit, flirty tension, and strong emotions. Their unconventional and lively personalities brings a fun quality to the pages, and total captivation to its readers. There are a myriad of fascinating details within this short read that easily conjures imagination and really helps you envision the different species introduced. I enjoyed the multi-alternating narration between the two leads, the villains who are after them, and the couple's baby who foreshadows future events.
Vaughan and Staples are an excellent duo of story crafters that, together, have created an immersive and addicting tale of galactic proportions. If you've never picked up a comic book or graphic novel before here would be the place to start, especially for those keen science fiction buffs! Saga is compact with action, adventure, humor, and romance. It's a mature sci-fi fantasy with adult and very graphic subject matter best suited for 18+ years or older. Saga stole my attention from the first two pages, and that doesn't happen all that often. I've only just begun my descent into reading graphic novels but already I'm quite sure this is one of the best. I'm really intrigued to see what will transpire next in issue #2!
Graphic novels look like such a fun reading experience. And I did like my comics when I was younger I should really give it a try. This one sounds like it was done really well and perfect for someone new to the whole graphic novel ordeal :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm really enjoying them! It's a nice break between novels because they are short and illustrated so you get the best of both worlds. Saga was recommended to me as a segue into graphic novels and so far I have not been disappointed. Definitely give it a try and if you read this series let me know what you think! :)
